The soft pattern of a butterfly’s wings, the amazing flight of birds, or the magical silkworm spinning its cocoon are some of nature’s little secrets. These phenomenons of nature are not captured by the electrifying cities’ lights – but they shine in our memory. Our sensibility towards light has been entirely lost as we do not see it anymore while living in blinding illuminating wavelengths. The street lamp PAPILIO on the other hand distributes a high-quality light spectrum that makes insects come out at night to enjoy it – without disturbing their natural behavior. The economically resourceful installation is powered by using an integrated wind rotor, generating energy using strong airflow, and preventing CO2 emissions from fossil fuels.

At the same time, throughout the world, urban insects have started to disappear as light pollution has become more and more of a threat. Since PAPILIO produces its energy by using an integrated wind rotor, a large part of the occupied space in the city can be lit in a very energy-efficient way while providing also a habitat for insects.

It also reduces the bad health effects of light pollution on humans. Light pollution causes depression, sleep disorders, diabetes, and cancer.
The PAPILIO project is designed to deal with the light problem in a new and in an innovative way: they generate electricity from wind power. This generated power is used for lighting – which can largely be taken from renewable energies. By optimizing the use of generated energy, it avoids its conversion into heat and further use of electricity.
The Papilion, which was actively used in several parts of Berlin, produced up to 12 volts.
The system operates at low wind speeds by using lightweight, electrically charged vanes that rotate with the slightest breeze, and LED lights that emit energy-efficient, bright light. Papilio does not need expensive electrical construction. It is self-sufficient. In addition, the lights can be connected to local electricity and the excess energy can be diverted to the city. With its infrared sensor, it lights up when someone passes by. Thus, the energy it has is preserved for a long time.
As its name implies, this lamp brings light and happiness in unpredictable situations. With a simple gesture, the Bloom light helps you create a positive environment that encourages human connection and allows you to stay in the present moment. It brings joy to your life simply by being there.
