Pastel is a lighting and material problem before it is a shopping problem. The colour only reads soft if the surfaces are matte and the light is warm, so a room full of glossy pastel plastic under a cool white bulb looks cheap however much you spent on it. Fix the base first: warm white bulbs (around 2700K), a neutral wall, texture in the big soft pieces. Then add colour.

The pieces that carry the look are the large ones. A rug, bedding, throw blankets, pillow cases, curtains. Those are the surfaces your eye reads as the colour of the room, so a Nordic rug or a set of soft pillow cases changes more than a whole shelf of small objects ever will. After that, add one light with shape to it: a pastel crystal drop chandelier, a soft glow ceiling light, or a small vintage night lamp for the bedside.

Keep the palette tight or the room turns into a sweet shop. One neutral base plus two pastels is enough, and each of those two should appear at least twice in the room so it reads as a decision rather than an accident. Pink cushion, pink lampshade. Mint blanket, mint in the wall art. Everything else stays plain: white, cream, pale wood, soft grey. Past two pastels the room stops having a colour at all.

Where this aesthetic goes wrong is scale and quantity. A lot of small pastel objects on every surface reads as clutter, not calm, and pastel loses its whole effect the moment it has nothing plain to sit against. Give the small things a home instead: a no-drill wall organizer, a bedside nightstand, one shelf, so the desk and floor stay clear. Be realistic about colour on a screen, too. Product photos are lit for the photo, so a pastel can shift a shade under your own bulbs, and pale plastics left in direct sun can yellow over time.

The small pieces are for finishing a room, not building one: a pastel silicone phone case, a liquid motion hourglass on a desk, a mug warmer next to where you actually sit (check there is a socket within reach), a compact plant growing house if you want greenery without a windowsill. Every product carries its rating and reviews from buyers, and in this collection those are worth more than usual, because colour is the thing people photograph and complain about when it arrives half a shade off.
