Ritorno a scuola

Back to school comes down to two purchases that matter and a long tail of small ones that do not. The bag is carried every day and fails first, almost always at a strap or a zip. The desk and the chair decide whether work happens at a table or on a bed. Most of this collection is backpacks, which is the right emphasis.

The bags sort by what they were built for. Laptop carriers like the Waterproof USB Charging Elite Pack Laptop Backpack and the Simple Life USB Charging Business Backpack. Big travel styles like the Large Capacity Travel Ergonomic Backpack and the Multi-Compartment Urban Life Travel Backpack. Character bags for younger kids, including the Banana Style Lightweight Everyday Backpack and the Adventure Shark Large Travel Backpack. And the Reflective Large Waterproof Kids School Bag, which is the one to look at for a child walking or cycling in the dark half of the year. The Anti-Theft Large Capacity Oxford Backpack keeps the main zip against your back, which matters on a crowded bus and not at all in a classroom.

Four things on the listing tell you whether a bag will last: strap width and padding, whether the laptop sleeve is padded and sized for the actual laptop, the stated capacity against what gets carried, and how the reviews describe it when it is full. One warning about the USB charging bags, since the name misleads people. The port is a pass through. It routes a cable from a power bank you supply to the outside of the bag, and there is no battery inside. Genuinely handy if they already carry a power bank, meaningless if they do not.

The sitting half is smaller and it is where the difference shows up once term settles in. There is the Modern Home Office Desk Workstation, the Smart Working Desk with Storage, the Work Everywhere Ergonomic Adjustable Rolling Desk that moves between rooms, the Office Comfort Adjustable Leather Comfy Chair and the Modern Study Desk Space-Saving Bunk Bed for a room where the desk has to live under the bed. Overflow goes to the Wooden Modern Open Concept Bookcase with Shelves or the Home Bathroom Storage Organizer Rolling Rack. The Multifunctional Portable Pencil Case and the Mini Portable Office Desk Vacuum Cleaner are the small stuff, and the desk vacuum is a novelty that turns out to be useful next to a sharpener.

Two things to think twice about. The Foldable Lazy Desk for Bed is fine for a laptop and a drink and wrong as the main study surface, because nobody gets through two hours of work hunched over a bed tray. And the Tactical Lightweight Military Style Camping Backpack looks great and runs into bag rules at some schools, so check the rules before you check out. Beyond that: buy a child's bag with a little growing room, read the reviews specifically for zip and strap complaints (those are the failures buyers come back to report), and let the ratings settle the rest.
