Most cat toys fail for the same reason: the cat plays with it once, works out it does not move on its own, and never touches it again. Cats hunt. A toy that does not move unpredictably is furniture. They need you, so they are the toys for the ten minutes in the evening when a cat wants to hunt something and would otherwise hunt your ankles. Retractable and electric wands sit here too. The honest limit is that a wand is only as good as the person holding it, so buy one you will actually use.

Scratching boards, tunnels and wall-mounted pieces are less toys than territory. A scratcher is not really about play, it is about giving a cat somewhere legitimate to strip its claws instead of the arm of your sofa. Cardboard wears out and is meant to; wood and sisal last far longer. Tunnels suit nervous cats, who use them as somewhere to hide as much as somewhere to play.

A few things the reviews will tell you and the photos will not. How loud an automatic toy is, which decides whether it lives in the living room or gets switched off. Whether a battery lid actually stays shut, since a cat will find it. Whether small feathers or bells detach, which matters because they get swallowed. And whether the thing survives a determined cat at all, because plenty of them do not.

If you are buying for a cat you do not live with, a teaser wand and a catnip-friendly scratcher are the safe pair: neither needs sizing, neither needs batteries, and both get used. Sort by rating and read what buyers say about how long the interest lasted, because that is the only measure that counts.
