The light you use last thing at night has a bigger effect on a room than the ceiling fixture nobody switches on. This collection is the soft end of lighting: projectors that put stars on the ceiling, lamps you can dim to almost nothing, and reading lights that let one person read while another sleeps.

Projectors are the headline. Galaxy and planetarium models throw moving nebula and starfields across a ceiling, and the good ones let you separate the star layer from the coloured cloud layer so you can run just the stars once the novelty settles. Judge them on three things: how sharp the stars are (cheap optics give you fuzzy blobs), whether there is an auto-off timer, and how loud the motor is. A projector that hums is a projector you stop using in a dark, quiet room.

The lamps split by job. Mood and ambient pieces, colour-changing night lamps and atmospheric lights, are for the last hour of the evening. Reading and desk lamps are for actually seeing, and the ones worth having dim properly rather than stepping between three harsh settings. Neon signs and party lights sit in a third group: they are decoration first, and they do not light a room, which is fine as long as you know that going in.

A few honest notes. Warm light in the evening is easier on your eyes than cold white, so anything advertised as adjustable colour temperature is worth the small premium. Rechargeable and touch-switch lamps are genuinely better beside a bed than anything you have to find a switch for in the dark. And brightness numbers in listings are unreliable across brands, so the reviews are the real source on whether a night light is a gentle glow or floodlights the room.

Setting up a bedroom? One dimmable source beside the bed, one soft light on the opposite side, and a projector only if you actually want the ceiling to be the feature. Three bright lights in one small room is worse than one good one. Sort by rating and read what buyers say about the dimmest setting, because that is the setting you will use most.
