ABC News: How to Stream Live Without Cable

ABC News does not require a cable subscription to watch live. You can stream its 24/7 digital network, ABC News Live, completely free on major streaming devices, or pick up your local ABC station over the air with a basic digital antenna.

Key takeaways

• ABC News Live is entirely free and streams 24/7 across Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Pluto TV, and YouTube.
• Flagship linear broadcasts like World News Tonight and Good Morning America require an over-the-air antenna or a paid live TV streaming service to watch live as they air.
• Hulu subscribers can watch World News Tonight and Nightline on demand shortly after their original evening broadcast without a live TV tier.
• Free digital streams offer rolling national coverage, but they do not carry local affiliate news or local emergency weather cut-ins.

What is ABC News Live?

ABC News Live is the dedicated, ad-supported streaming news network operated by ABC News. It runs 24 hours a day and features original newscasts, live breaking news coverage, and long-form documentary segments without a paywall.

Unlike the main ABC broadcast network, ABC News Live does not show entertainment programming, network daytime talk shows, or prime-time dramas. It functions similarly to traditional cable news channels like CNN or MSNBC, but it distributes directly over the internet. You can open the ABC News app on an Apple TV, Roku, or Amazon Fire TV device and start watching immediately. It never prompts you to sign in with a cable provider.

How can you watch the main ABC broadcast for free?

You can watch your local ABC affiliate broadcast for free by connecting an over-the-air digital antenna directly to your TV tuner. ABC broadcasts unencrypted high-definition signals over public airwaves in virtually every media market across the United States.

An indoor digital antenna plugs into the coaxial port on the back of your television. Once you run a channel scan, you get access to your regional ABC station at zero monthly cost. This includes Good Morning America, the evening edition of World News Tonight with David Muir, and your city's local affiliate updates. The signal is uncompressed, meaning the picture quality is often sharper than compressed cable feeds.

The catch is physical reception. If you live more than 35 miles from your local broadcast tower or sit behind heavy concrete walls, your signal might cut out or fail to scan entirely.

How do your streaming options compare?

If you want ABC News content, you have three primary paths: free ad-supported streaming, an antenna, or a paid subscription bundle.

Who should rely on free streaming instead of live TV?

Free streaming via ABC News Live works best for viewers who simply want rolling national news, election coverage, and major press conferences.

If you just want background news while working or quick updates on major world events, the free stream gives you that without a bill. You can find it integrated into free ad-supported streaming services like Pluto TV, Samsung TV Plus, Tubi, and The Roku Channel.

However, you should skip the standalone free stream if your primary goal is watching your hometown evening news or catching the main network feed live at 6:30 PM Eastern. The 24/7 stream switches to digital-only anchors during those time slots rather than simulcasting the flagship network broadcast.

How do you watch on demand?

You can catch individual segments and full episodes on demand through Hulu and YouTube.

ABC uploads individual news packages, interviews, and deep-dive investigations to the official ABC News YouTube channel within minutes of airing. For full broadcast episodes, a standard Hulu on-demand plan posts the latest editions of World News Tonight, 20/20, and Nightline a few hours after they conclude on broadcast television.

If you do not care about watching the news the exact second it airs, an existing on-demand Hulu library subscription is more than enough to stay informed.

What common mistakes do viewers make?

The most common mistake is confusing the ABC app's live broadcast tab with the ABC News Live feed.

When you download the general "ABC" app on a smart TV, it offers two different live options. One is the regional live broadcast of your local station, which requires a cable, satellite, or live TV streaming login. The second is the "ABC News Live" channel, which sits in its own tab and runs without any login screen. If the app asks you to select your TV provider, you have clicked into the local broadcast feed by mistake. Switch to the dedicated News section to bypass the prompt entirely.
