A pendant light is the one fixture people notice before they notice the furniture. It hangs at eye level, it is lit whenever the room is in use, and getting the drop height wrong is the single most common regret. Drop height first: over a dining table, the bottom of the shade usually wants to sit well clear of head height when someone stands, and over an island you want it low enough to light the surface without blocking the sightline across the room. Then the bulb fitting and whether the piece is dimmable, since a bright kitchen pendant and a soft evening one are rarely the same setting. Metal shades throw light down in a pool, open cages and glass spread it wider and cast pattern on the walls. Neither is better, they just do different jobs.

Material tells you most of what you need about how a fitting will age. Iron and aluminium keep their shape and take a knock. Real wood and stone bring weight, which matters for the fixing you use. Acrylic is light and cheap and looks convincing in photographs, but it scratches and yellows with heat over time, so read the reviews on anything that looks like glass at a price glass does not reach.

If you are lighting a room from scratch, start with the ceiling piece, then add a wall or table lamp on the opposite side. One overhead light on its own flattens a room and puts everyone's face in shadow. Two sources at different heights is the difference between a lit room and a room that feels finished. Sort by rating and read what buyers say about the fitting quality and the cable length, because those are the two details product photos never show.
